A web designer considers three things in web design namely:

1.   Purpose of the Website

 Purpose of the Website

The purpose of the website can be derived from many factors. However, it commonly depends on the goals that the clients want to achieve. Business websites usually aim to generate leads and increase sales. (Source: Codeless) Some others simply want to promote their business and establish their online presence. (Source: Forbes) By understanding the objectives of the client or business, the designer will be able to create a website that will make a solid impact both on their and their client’s customers. One of the best ways to determine the purpose of the website is to know their target audience.

·       Target Audience/Market

Every website has a target market. Some of them targets readers while some targets a certain group of buyers. In addition, knowing the needs and preferences of the target audience will let the designer know how the audience can relate to the website. (Source: Web Designer Depot) If the website is intended for fashionable audience, you can include fashion-related themes. If it is an e-commerce website, do not forget to include a shopping cart. On the other hand, you can include an MLS listing search box for real estate websites.

2.   Branding

Branding

Branding tells the audience what they can expect from the business or organization. (Source: Entrepreneur) There are two main things that define the business brand: the logo and the tag line. The color and the theme of the website would also depend on the context of the logo and the tag line.

·       Logo

The logo is the face of the company, organization or website. It is the visual representation of a brand’s unique identity. (Source: Houston Chronicle)

·       Tag line

On the other hand, the tag line or the branding message explains how the company or organization wants to be remembered by their target audience. It is usually the promise made by the business or organization to their consumers. (Source: HOW)

3.   User-friendliness

 User-friend

Just like offline businesses, a website should also be able to give consumers or readers an excellent browsing experience. A user-friendly website is composed of two elements:

·       Design

The first things that website visitors notice is the web design. According to a study conducted by Google, it takes around 50 milliseconds for users to create an opinion about a website. The design of a website helps the users to determine whether they will stay on the website or leave. A website’s design usually consists of various elements such as color, font, spacing, flow, images and graphics. Again, the design of a website should follow the preferences of the target audience and the nature of the business or organization.

·       User Experience

User experience (UX) is often determined by the “ease-of-use” of a website. UX is also about understanding what the user’s needs and how they would feel once they use the website. The purpose of user experience is to make sure that the users acquire value in what the website is offering them. (Source: Usability.gov) You can include interactive widgets like social media sharing buttons, comment boxes, and customer service chat box for the convenience of the users.

Today’s web users are getting more sophisticated.  Since the website is the online counterpart of a business or organization, web designers should allocate enough time to achieve a clean, appealing and professionally designed website that can attract the target market of the website.
